Work with us

The Academy creates paid jobs for people who've found it hard to get one. You don't need coding experience or a CV to register your interest.

A fair start matters as much as a free lesson.

The Schaffa Foundation has spent years beside people doing it tough in Sydney. Many want to work, and are ready to, but can't get past the first interview. The Academy is built to give them that start.

Our roles are for people who've experienced homelessness, been out of work for a long time, live with disability or mental ill health, have left care or prison, or are rebuilding after arriving in Australia as a refugee.

122,494people in Australia were homeless on Census night 2021.
2×People with disability are twice as likely to be unemployed as people without disability.

The work

These are the roles we're building first. They're paid, part-time and flexible, and most can be done from home.

Course tester

Work through new lessons before they go live, and tell us exactly where you got stuck. Being new to coding is the qualification: if a lesson works for you, it works for a 13-year-old beginner.

No contact with learners.

Learning mentor

Look over learners' work, answer their questions and run small online help sessions. You'll work through Code Quest yourself first, with training from our team.

Needs a Working With Children Check. We'll help you apply.

Family support

Help families get started: answer emails and calls, set up accounts, and walk parents through the dashboard. Good for people who are patient and like helping others.

Contact with parents, not children.

IT traineeship

A supported path into IT work. Learn alongside the HostSavers team who run our servers, and help keep the Academy's systems running.

For people who've finished a course with us or have some IT interest.

What we promise

  • Paid work, at fair rates, for every hour you do.
  • Hours that fit around appointments, study and family.
  • Training from your first day, and a named person to go to.
  • A reference and a record of the skills you've built when you're ready to move on.
  • Your story stays yours. We never share why someone joined us.

For services and caseworkers

Employment services, housing and disability providers, and community groups can refer someone, with their permission. Fill in the form together, and add your organisation's name so we can keep you in the loop.

We're building our first team now. Everyone who registers will hear from us as roles open.

Register your interest

Tell us a little about yourself. There's no test and no wrong answer. We'll be in touch by email when roles open.

We only use these details to contact you about work with the Academy. See our privacy notice.
